Meet Diane Hall, a Lewisburg artist who creates beautiful mosaic mirrors, tables, teapots, and lamps using broken dishes, figurines, and found objects.  This talented artist makes jewelry from gemstones and silver, and from recycled tin and found objects. She is also a trained aromatherapist and has created a variety of her own mixtures of essential oils that are both healthful and energizing. She says they are good for skincare, sleep aid, and a general feeling of well-being. She goes onto say that the late Chally Erb loved her Relax Spray.

Diane describes herself as a lifelong maker of objects.  She tells us, “I am a working studio artist. I attended Marshall University for weaving. I’ve had a large house and studio for the last 25 years where I made, displayed, and sold my mosaic art. I showed and sold my mosaic mirrors in several restaurants in North Carolina, at Carnegie Hall, The Greenbrier Visitor’s Center, and at Tamarack.”

She says her mosaics are formed around the materials she finds or that someone breaks.  She starts the process with a plate or knick-knack. “Over time, I add more components and a story or theme begins to arise. When a pile is formed I decide on a base. A concrete disk for a table or a plywood piece for a mirror and I start arranging.” The end product is stunning.   

Diane finds her mosaic inspiration from thrift stores, someone breaking something, and coming across a unique piece in her travels. Gemstones are her biggest inspiration for her jewelry making.

Her advice for other artists is: “Pay attention to what interests you. Move-in that direction. Don’t worry.” She says she has several stand-out favorite pieces among her mosaics. One of her top pieces, however, is her Vegetable Oval Mirror where she used vintage Occupied Japan salt and pepper shakers.

She recently opened an exhibit at Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia. Her exhibit is called: “Kitsch Me Like You Mean It!” This exhibit is all about looking at art, not through the critical eye of an artist but through the eyes of a viewer who embraces the oddity, humor, and “banal” of kitsch and the irony that surrounds it.
