Cats Rule
by Sharon Ginsburg
Superb guitarist Roger Hoard performed a beautiful song about growing old called “Old Dogs” one Friday night in mid March at Carnegie Hall as part of the Legends of WV Bluegrass evening. He concluded his introduction of this song he had written by saying that no one wrote songs about cats. Well, excuse me, but cat lovers immediately got their hackles up.
Dogs are obedient and focused on being loyal to their owners while cats think differently. A smart dog is well trained by its owner while cats train their human wait staff who might mistakenly think they own the cat. Cats only verbalize meowing with people while communicating using snarls, claws, hisses and yowls to other cats.
Many people tend to be slow learners so cats often seem to be very noisy meowing a lot when people are present. It is common for cats to run training sessions on their wait staff, “open the door… now let me back in… open the door to let me out again… etc.” This can be done with the meowing or more subtly for a more observant and obedient owner. With a well trained cat owner, just a look with focused attention of the cat or a nod of the cat’s head will do the trick of getting the cat owner to open the door or a can of cat food or open the cupboard for a fun exploration or get out the box of stashed away cat toys.
Cats are smart as anyone who has a cat ruling their home will tell you. And yes, the song Roger Hoard’s incredibly skilled guitar playing decorated was beautifully written about getting old as we all do, including all living things, plants, insects or any other creature roaming out there. The chorus “old enough to know it all, humble just the same” describes old dogs. And one of the verses reminds us “in our minds we all pretend we’re never going to grow old.” Roger Hoard’s performance was one of the bright spots of the evening at Carnegie.
