WV Artist on Display: It’s Always Subject to Change – Interview w/ Anna Tuckwiller.

Meet Anna Stout Tuckwiller, the painter, designer, and photographer behind @bwoolfstudios. She designs iphone cases, pillow covers, tea towels, baby blankets, and more! Her paintings are offered as originals or high-quality prints. Anna recently displayed her work at Lee Street Studios in Lewisburg. Learn more about our WV artist of the month with our Q&A:

How do you describe your palette?

I would describe my palette as very intentionally bright with a lot of focus on primary and secondary colors. I actually gathered up a bunch of art I loved a year or 2 ago and kind of analyzed what I liked and didn’t like and what colors I tended to gravitate toward to create my palette. I use a lot of red, yellow, and green. But of course, it’s always subject to change.

What’s your greatest accomplishment?

I mean my actual greatest accomplishment is my kids, but I would say my proudest moment as an artist thus far was winning a pattern design competition hosted by my favorite designer at the time!

What obstacles do you need to overcome to find your creative space/muse?

My biggest obstacle is definitely just finding the time and energy to work on projects. A lot of my work is done really quickly at nap time or at 1am when everyone else is asleep. I would love to just have a few more hours in my day.

How do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration often comes from making things that I want and can’t quite find exactly as I want them. I originally started designing because I was frustrated at my options for little boy clothes and wanted to make my kids something other than trains and cars. Kids clothes, especially boys, have actually come a long way even in the last 5 years, just as a side note, and I  think a lot of that is due to the ability of small artists to make themselves more well known and accessible through social media. I also gather inspiration a lot through Instagram and just seeing what other artists are making on a daily basis.

What advice do you have for other artists?

I’m not sure I’m really qualified to be giving other artists advice but if I was going to I guess I would say just start something and put it out there. Even if it’s not exactly what you want it to be and you don’t have all the skills or all the time to make it that way yet, just create something and keep creating and getting feedback and you will get closer to what you want to make if you just keep doing it. A lot of the work I have gotten the best response to has been little experiments or things I didn’t personally love as much as other work.

What is your favorite piece(s) you’ve made and why?

I don’t know if I have a favorite. I definitely don’t get attached to the things I’ve made, before I was selling it I was just giving it away as fast as I could because no matter how much I like something when I first make it I  always end up feeling sort of tired of it.

How can our readers purchase your pieces?

My Etsy shop is the best, most direct way to purchase my art and various products that I’ve either handmade or handpicked which are made with my fabrics. I’m Listed as BWoolfStudios there and there is usually a link in my Instagram bio. Instagram is the best place to follow my recent work @bwoolfstudios  My Spoonflower shop and Society6 shop are always open as well! Spoonflower is a company that prints small batch fabrics in almost any material you can imagine. It’s amazing. They also have a sister company called Roostery where you can get my patterns printed on home goods from napkins to bedsheets. Society6 offers a multitude of home goods and accessories with patterns and other artwork on them. I often have a few products in downtown Lewisburg shops like Love Child and also occasionally help host events in Studio 9 at Lee Street Studios where you can check out my products in person.

The best way to contact me is via e-mail at annacstout@gmail.com or through DM on Instagram. I have Facebook as well but I don’t check it daily. I would love to hear from you!!
