Fall Fling: Go for the Fun, Stay for the Apple Butter

Fall in the Greenbrier Valley always feels like something special: crisp mornings, golden leaves, and flavors that taste like tradition. On Saturday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., The Dough Ball Bakery and Cheese n More Store will host the 3rd Annual Fall Fling in Gap Mills.

This day-long celebration brings together local businesses, farmers, crafters, and makers from Monroe County and beyond. It’s a true showcase of small-town creativity, food, and hospitality and an event designed to highlight the season and the community at its heart.

Old-Fashioned Traditions & Fresh Finds

One of the most beloved parts of the festival is the apple butter, made the old-fashioned way in a copper kettle. Attendees can watch the process up close, smell the sweetness as the apples cook down, and take home quarts and pints of a recipe that has been passed through at least three generations. It’s the kind of treat you’ll regret not stocking up on.

And that’s just the beginning. Visitors can also look forward to:

  • Free samples at Cheese n More
  • Fundraiser support for the Hanging Rock Observatory group
  • Bob Joyce and family serving their locally famous chicken and sides at the Old Gap Mills Country Store
  • Handmade baskets by Barry Shisler
  • Fresh produce from Mountain Shadow
  • Honey products from Little Creek Bee Company (also featured in this issue!)
  • Local arts, crafts, decor, and one-of-a-kind finds to browse all day

And when you’re ready to explore beyond the festival center, nearby favorites like Momma Joan’s Diner, Way Up Acres, and Sweet Springs Antiques are just minutes away.

The Dough Ball Bakery Story

Much of the joy of Fall Fling is rooted in The Dough Ball Bakery itself—a multi-generational labor of love operated by mother Sarah Martin, daughters Ashley Lucas and Casey Vanscoy, with Sarah’s mother, Frances Bostic, experienced renowned cook and baker helping in the store. Known for their warm hospitality and baked goods that feel like home, the bakery will feature plenty of familiar favorites during the event, including their famous pumpkin rolls, pepperoni rolls, and seasonal specialties baked just for the Fling.

“We’ll have a wonderful mix of local crafters, small businesses, and food vendors joining us. There will be handmade crafts, seasonal decor, and unique gifts, plus activities for kids and families to enjoy. Of course, our bakery will have plenty of treats, and we love being able to spotlight other local businesses right alongside us,” says Sarah.

Sarah shared that the event always surprises people with the sheer talent found right here in Monroe County. “People are often surprised by just how many talented small businesses and crafters we have in our area. It’s always fun to see people find a new favorite product, or meet a maker they didn’t know lives right here in the community.”

She continues, “We hope they leave with a sense of warmth and connection, some new favorite fall treats, and maybe even a bag of goodies from local crafters. Most of all, we hope they feel proud to be part of a community that comes together and celebrates each other.”

Community is at the heart of the Fall Fling. “Supporting one another is what small-town life is all about. By bringing local businesses and crafters together, we’re not only creating a fun event, but we’re also helping each other grow. It’s about community over competition, and that’s very important to us,” Sarah reflects.
