Situated just a 15-minute drive from the New River Gorge Bridge, a sister-owned and operated bakery in downtown Oak Hill (Fayette County) is becoming a regular stomping ground for locals and visitors. It’s called Custom Creations Bakery at 116 West Main Street. Open 4 days a week, this shop specializes in cupcakes, custom cakes, breads, crème horns, homemade rolls and a nice variety of breads, brownies, and cinnamon rolls! Since opening in June, 2020, the sisters tell us the local response has been amazing.

Before opening, owners Kaylee Morgan Whitlow and Hannah Rae Whitlow Stines tell us they worked as servers at Bob Evans in Fayetteville. They were laid off during covid and say they had nothing to do. One afternoon they found themselves brainstorming ideas. Avid bakers at home, they wondered, “what if we make a facebook page to sell baked goods?” They immediately put their plan into action and say, “we received so many orders that we couldn’t do it from our home anymore and we started searching for a building.” They would set up their bakery beside Café One Ten, a popular downtown eatery specializing in burgers, sandwiches, salads, steaks, fish, and pastas.

Oak Hill, with a population of less than 8,000, was the perfect option for Kaylee and Hannah. Their goal was to not only pursue their passion, but also help bring new life to their hometown. Things have been picking up and the sisters are thankful that many new businesses are opening up on the main street.

They are also very grateful for the support they have received from their small community and say, “without that encouragement, we wouldn’t be where we are today, we are so thankful for all of our customers.”

Kaylee and Hannah are self-taught bakers.

Kaylee and Hannah are self-taught bakers. They say their role models growing up are their parents and grandparents. “They have always stood by our sides no matter what and told us to follow our dreams,” says Kaylee. The bakery is just the beginning as these sisters are both full-time college students. Kaylee is pursuing a degree in social work at Concord University and Hannah is expected to graduate in May, 2022 with a degree in nursing from Bluefield State College. When not working or studying, the sisters enjoy shopping for bakery supplies and traveling.
