In the 20th century, Marlinton’s first mayor, Andrew Price wrote a poem called THERE AIN’T NO “G” IN MARLINTON, see poem below! Marlinton, West Virginia has always had spelling problems with its name so Andrew Price wrote these verses to discourage this mistake.

You can find the title to this poem as a large stencil in the dining room of Marlinton’s newest restaurant, Tudor’s Biscuit World!  The poem is framed below. Yes, the Charleston, WV based chain is expanding its reach inside the Mountain State with the opening of their 74th restaurant in Marlinton on Monday, September 12th at 5am!!! They are ready to give everyone a taste of their country-style, made-from-scratch biscuits. This new location is just minutes from the Virginia state line and about halfway between Lewisburg and Snowshoe Ski Resort. The restaurant is on the main street in downtown on 221 8^th Street.

The new building is a bright, airy and attractive new place to dine-in or grab food on the go with their convenient drive-thru.  With an emphasis on country cooking, great tasting food and a warm and hospitable atmosphere, restaurant owner Zach Chittum (picture above to the left) is excited to offer breakfast and lunch everyday.

If you are not familiar with Tudor’s Biscuit World, they are known for their wide array of signature breakfast sandwiches, breakfast platters, lunch sandwiches, and home-style dinner entrees. Zach says he is very excited for the opening and that he and his team look forward to serving the people of Pocahontas County and surrounding area with delicious country cooking fast.

Zach tells us that the decision to establish a Tudor’s franchise in Marlinton was made because of the areas demographics as well as the 2013 fire which burned down the McK building, owned by him and which housed a storefront and apartments. The blaze destroyed three buildings total: the McK which also known as The Old Bank Building, Dirt Bean Ohana, and Hudson’s Variety Store buildings. Firefighting units were called as far away as Lewisburg. To help with the costs, The Irish Pub in Lewisburg held a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser (pictured below) to raise funds for the town.

Regarding the new building Zach says, “it’s beautiful and there is great access to our parking and the drive-thru from the street. I found this location to be perfect for a Tudor’s Biscuit World Franchise to serve their unique mixture of deliciously cooked homemade foods.”

Having been a Marlinton business owner and area resident for several years, Zach has a clear idea of the kind of warm and welcoming service area residents want. He believes that this Tudor’s will add to the community something that they have needed for a long time: a restoration from the 2013 ashes and a drive forward.  The Tudor’s team consists of about 15-25 employees who will provide the community with meals made from scratch, good quality, and reasonable prices.

Once open, hours will be Monday-Saturday from 5am to 2pm and Sundays from 7am to 2pm.

THERE AIN’T NO “G” IN MARLINTON

A smart and stylish man was he,
He had a college-bought degree,
He wished to buy some timber land,
And so he took his pen in hand,
But when it all was said and done,
He hurt his friend in Marlinton,
He did a capital crime you see,
Spelling Marlinton with a G.

There ain’t no G in Marlinton,
There ain’t no G in Marlinton,
There ain’t no G in Marlinton,
There ain’t no G in Marlinton.

Jacob Marlin, a hunter bold,
Settled here in days of old,
He camped in a hollow tree,
And spelled his name with nary G.
His partner, a hunter, also came,
Stephen B. Sewell, was his name,
The year was seventeen-fifty-one,
They founded the town of Marlinton.

While they dwelt in solitude,
Sewell got in an ugly mood;
He took his knife and on a tree,
Cut M A R L I N G.

Then Jacob Marlin, mighty quick,
Fell on him like a thousand brick,
For it always riled his family,
For folks to spell the name with G.

Old Jacob Marlin died in bed,
Sewell –– the Indians killed him dead.
It was an awful fate, but he
Was prone to use the extra G.
Let all take warning from his fate,
And when our town they designate,
They sure must mind their p’s and q’s,
This awful G we can’t excuse.
