Mary Shelley’s Classic Comes to Life in Lewisburg

Greenbrier Valley Theatre to Produce Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s classic, Frankenstein, has been made into numerous adaptations since it was first written in 1818. It would be difficult to find an audience member who has not seen the iconic horror symbol somewhere in literature, film, cartoon, or Halloween decoration sometime in their lives.

This Halloween season Greenbrier Valley Theatre is preparing to produce a new adaptation of Shelley’s classic work adapted by Catherine Bush. This take on the story will focus much more on Victor Frankenstein’s relationships and how the creature he created affected – or destroyed them. Bush’s work will make audiences question if Victor Frankenstein created a monster, or if he made a man that the world turned into a monster.

The production of this popular title will open at GVT in October with a mix of familiar faces as well as actors making their GVT debut. Jeff Ronan (Little Shop of Horrors) will lead the cast as Victor Frankenstein, while Christopher Joel Onken will be making his GVT debut as the Creature. Erin Amlicke, Jonathan Bangs, Megan Hamm, Ian Kramer (Alabama Story) and Lee Palmer (ART) will complete the seven member cast playing over 20 total characters between them.

Jenna Sulecki (Alabama Story) returns to Greenbrier Valley Theatre to direct the production.

“I’m excited for this fresh, exciting adaptation to bring Frankenstein to new, younger audiences. While the classics can sometimes feel difficult to understand, theater can shift the lens of a story to make it more accessible,” says Sulecki. “This production will excite the classic horror buff and theater newcomer alike.”

The production will feature scenic design completed byRichard Crowell, costume design by Jenna Fawn Brown, and lighting design by E. Tonry Lathroum. Matthew Scott Campbell will be aiding with special fight direction.Sound design is completed by Abigail Coppock, with prop design by Ashton Webb. Elizabeth Salisch serves as Production Stage Manager, who will be assisted by Amelia Heastings.

Frankenstein opens at GVT on October 13th and runs through the 28th. Tickets are $32 for general seating, $29 for senior citizens age 60 and above, and $20 for students.
