February at Elmwood Estate!

Located in Union, WV., Elmwood Estate is a historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1838 by William B Phillips, Thomas Jefferson’s best brickmason at his University of Virginia project. Elmwood is a two-story, brick dwelling with classical revival details in the doric order.  The front facade features wide limestone steps and a veranda, with second-story balcony, Chinese Chippendale railings at both levels, and doric portico in front.  The house was built by Hugh Caperton (1781–1847). It was also home to his son, Allen Caperton from 1810–1876. Allen was the first ex-Confederate Senator to be elected to the United States Senate after the Civil War.
