Elmwood, A Historic Wonderland

Located in Union, WV., Elmwood is a historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1838 by William B Phillips, Thomas Jefferson’s best brickmason at his University of Virginia project. Elmwood is a two-story, brick dwelling with classical revival details in the doric order.  The front facade features wide limestone steps and a veranda, with second-story balcony, Chinese Chippendale railings at both levels, and doric portico in front.  The house was built by Hugh Caperton (1781–1847). It was also home to his son, Allen Caperton from 1810–1876. Allen was the first ex-Confederate Senator to be elected to the United States Senate after the Civil War.

Today, Anita and Chris Wszolek invite you to spend time at this historic wonderland.  They purchased the property in 2001 and have made, over a period of 15 years, a complete restoration of the main house and outbuildings. Elmwood is now an elegant wedding and event venue, as well as a beautiful place to stay. Guests can enjoy the magnificent bar room, formal dining room, lounge, and outdoor dining area. A recent development has been the initiation of a private club, The Agricultural Club of Old Monroe, that invites people to become part of Elmwood’s history through celebration of the nation’s agricultural heritage. As a club member, you will benefit from the fully licensed bar and may enjoy delicious food prepared by Chef Reed Vandenberghe. Through an online application process and just $30/year membership fee (for a limited time – fees will soon be increased), you can enjoy Elmwood’s amenities among the company of other members throughout the year. All proceeds from the business are used to preserve and maintain Elmwood.

Built in 1958, the Ranch House at Elmwood is located directly adjacent to the big house. Comfortably sleeping 6, this is a spacious home that has been thoroughly restored to create an elegant but relaxed yesteryear environment. Every day, guests from all over the world are visiting Monroe County and staying at the Ranch House. It is available for visits by booking on airbnb.com.

“Check out Elmwood Estate in Union WV.  A beautiful place for weddings, events or just for a getaway!  Give Chris and Anita a call for more information and check out their Facebook page!!!” – Margie H.

Not only is Elmwood a beautiful place to stay, it has been a luxurious wedding venue for 180 years.  Weekend wedding packages include lodging and holding the ceremony on the west lawn. They can accommodate up to 200 guests with the reception on the east lawn.

If you are seeking an event venue, Elmwood invites you to book a party of your choice including costume parties, masked balls, speakeasy theme parties, ‘murder’ mysteries, debutante coming outs, hay rides, photo shoots and fashion shows.

On Tuesday, July 3rd from 5-11pm, the Agricultural Club of Old Monroe hosts a “Meet and Greet” with some of the Greenbrier Classic/PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Golf Caddies. These top-notch professionals are staying at The Ranch House during the golf classic and on this night, members will enjoy a delicious buffet including Chef Reed’s Smoked Brisket and other Barbecue Delicacies.

Other club events in July and August include a “Book Reading and Signing” by noted author Andrea Barnet, a Wine Tasting, and a Sunday Brunch.

“Great place to sit on the porch and let your worries just fade away. Chris and Anita are super people with making sure you are comfortable and if there is anything that you might need…” – Wayne Gould.
