On Sunday, August 6th head to the Irish Pub in downtown Lewisburg at 3pm for a Bloody Mary’s, mimosa, or a classic pint of your favorite brew and enjoy the tunes of New Orleans musicians, Beth Patterson and Josh Paxton. They will perform what they describe as an intricate style of bouzouki and piano! In addition to some new original material that they are developing together, Josh invites Beth out of her comfort zone with music by Chick Corea and James Booker. The duo has also been rearranging some recognizable tunes. He encourages her to play jazz and she makes him play Rush and things in crazy Arabic scales.
Described by audiences as “a cross between a cobra and a puppy,” multi-instrumentalist Beth Patterson is foremost a player of the eight- and ten- stringed Irish bouzoukis (adaptations of a traditional Greek instrument). She is known for her razor wit and musical versatility, Beth’s performances are chock full of drive, savage energy, and passion, laced with humor and rapport with her listeners, dishing out an eclectic repertoire of original and traditional songs. She integrates her quirky, progressive sound with Celtic music and other ethnic styles, resulting in her own sound she dubs “SWAP” (Songwriter/World/Acoustic/Progressive).
Josh Paxton has been a fixture on the New Orleans music scene for over a decade, performing as a solo artist, group leader, and sideman with many of the Crescent City’s top names. His diverse musical background ranges from avant-garde jazz to stints with major label rock bands. Currently, he is focusing on his unique approach to New Orleans Rhythm and Blues piano style.
Beth and Josh have been sitting in on each other’s gigs for the past seven months, but only had our first official duo gig fairly recently. This August, the duo will be on tour spanning Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Lake Eire. Some of the gigs are just Josh, and some are just Beth, but there will be duo shows such as the upcoming gig at the Irish Pub. Other duo gigs will be at (are you ready for this?) Butt Shack Barbecue in Fairfield, Ohio. How can you not love a venue with a name like that?
