Sat. Oct 4: Qiet at Freshwater Folk Fest

Qiet_press1

The great outdoors at the White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery furnishes a perfect setting for a unique combination of free entertainment and activities related to the celebration of the life-giving streams and lakes that we enjoy. It’s the 10th Annual Freshwater Folk Festival on Saturday, October 4 from 10am to 4pm. There will be plenty of music, discovery, and fun for children and adults. Food and crafts will also be available for purchase.

At 10am, the acoustic string and vocal trio, Sassafrazz, will lead things off at the amphitheater. They’ve promised to serenade us with an eclectic mix of instrumentals and songs from the Appalachian and Celtic traditions, vintage jazz, early country, and contemporary folk music. Mary Dailey contributes solid vocals, rhythm guitar, and upright bass. Rachel Johnson skillfully plays fiddle. Bob Adams creates magic on mandolin, cittern, and guitar.

At noon, it will be time for something completely different in the form of a five-member Charleston-area band named Qiet (featured above). Their performances are infused with influences of many cultures of the world, refined in the mountains of West Virginia. Qiet radiates undeniable energy, passionate lyrics, and infectious humor via 1920’s jazz, gipsy music, some rock, etcetera, etcetera. It’s an experience that keeps audiences jiving and swinging long after their concert are over. To learn more about the band, find them at facebook.com/qietmusic

You put on quite a show last night at Brothers Drake Meadery. I loved your music, yet once again. I’ll be checking the schedule for your next appearance. I’ll probably have to buy another CD, though. I fear my daughter may steal the one I got last night and take it with her when she heads back to Bama for college… 😛 – Bill Browne referring to Qiet, via facebook. 8.10.14

At 2pm an exciting country music band from Beckley will be on the stage. The lead vocalists and rhythm guitarists are Cody Wickline and Krista Hughes. The drummer, guitarist, and bassist trio playing with them is called Switch, a popular group of performers in their own right. This entire ensemble got an enthusiastic response from the crowd at the West Virginia State Fair this year.

Chally Erb and Beth White will be living the high life on stilts with Chally clowning around with his huge stuffed fish.

Under the big tent, there will be many exhibits and demonstrations related to freshwater resources and wildlife, and guided hatchery tours will show off the trout egg production and freshwater mussel rearing projects at the hatchery. Hands-on activities for children will continue to be the hallmark of the Freshwater Folk Festival. For example, Jessica Levine’s contribution to the festival fun will include art and science activities related to the role of insects and birds in the pollination of plants.

With one exception, people driving to the festival must turn from East Main Street onto Hemlock Drive (the second street to the west of the hatchery) and park on the grass behind the hatchery. The exception is that those with handicapped certification can enter through the main hatchery entrance and park next to the hatchery office.
