Greenbrier’s 3rd Annual Winterfest, Jan 25-27

2013 gets off to a wonderful start with the 3rd Annual Winterfest, held at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. Starting on Friday, January 25th, the list of festivities is sure to spark interest in all of those wishing to enjoy the Greenbrier River Valley’s cold season in style.

Returning once again, the National Ice Carving Association Competition is a true fan favorite, and a delight to witness. Whether it is in the midst of creating intricate pieces from a stale block of ice, or simply viewing the finished product, this art form is truly something to behold. The amount of talent and creativity to complete these lustrous ice sculptures is sizeable, not to mention the countless, enduring hours spent behind a chainsaw, honing one’s craft. Carving demonstrations will be done on both Friday and Saturday of the event.

The National Ice Carving Association Competition will judge the ice sculptors in several different categories, putting each contestant’s talent and time management to the test. During competition, the ice carvers will be given a chosen subject topic to create, in varying amount of time. The time intervals in which the participants have to complete their sculpture ranges from 15 minutes to 4 hours, allowing for very little error and second judgment.

After taking in the life-like imagery of the sculptures, many other activities await you during this annual festival. One of the Greenbrier Resort’s newest amenities, the Outdoor Skating Rink is a robust 70 feet x 140 feet. No need to worry about obtaining skates beforehand, the resort has rentals available for all participants. Outdoor heaters, located in several fringe areas alongside of the rink, are there to keep you warm and toasty during the intervals between your Olympic Gold moments.

Wine tastings, with an experienced sommelier on hand, will be available to attendants during Friday and Saturday of Winterfest. Live performances at the Casino Club, featuring Lady D and MI$$ION, and Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr., will be held during Friday and Saturday evening.

Visitors wishing to leisurely stroll through the resort’s grounds can take advantage of a relaxing Carriage Ride. An Afternoon Tea with accompanying concert will also be held each afternoon in the historic main dining room. Additional activities will be added to the event in the coming days, so be sure to check online for updates and scheduled times.

Regardless if the snowflakes fall, the ice will surely be chiseled during this year’s annual Winterfest! Plenty of things to do and see, so mosey on down to the Greenbrier Resort and have fun, bring a camera, and continue ringing in your New Year with cheer.
