Artist on Display: Sandra Schmocker

Sandra Schmocker is an excellent artist from Pennsylvania who has resided in Greenbrier County for almost forty years. Although skilled in many forms of art, Sandra primarily focuses on painting, which she enjoys the most. Over her career, she has won various awards and displayed her art in many locations, including the Tamarack.

Sandra has a keen interest in art, pottery, nature, and plants. Many of her paintings feature nature and plants, as well as portraits and abstract art. She enjoys all forms of art but has always been drawn to creative, unique paintings. Her work includes watercolor, oil painting, mechanical drawing, and collage.

Sandra has been passionate about art from a young age. She told Hashtag that her older sister’s art inspired her to pursue her own interest in art. Sandra was always drawing or coloring as a child, leading her parents to enroll her in art lessons, and eventually, she attended Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts. For many years, Sandra hoped to become a full-time artist, but her dream was put on hold until about six years ago when she was hired at Ross Hanna Studio in Lewisburg and began hosting Paint Night events. Since then, Sandra has hosted Paint Night events at various locations, including churches, the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging, Carnegie Hall’s Kids College, 4-H camp, private parties, and Art Alive at the Greenbrier. She also hosts Paint and Sip events for holidays, corporate events, and guests. “I studied and struggled but now get to be an artist full-time. I have been blessed to go to the Greenbrier and do the fun events,” said Sandra. Besides managing Art Alive, Sandra still accepts commission paintings, including memorial pieces and those for private events.

When hosting Paint Nights, Sandra works with the customer’s ideas, creating paintings in her own style and breaking them down into simpler steps for easier learning. She believes it’s important to be different from other artists so that all art does not look the same. Sandra especially enjoys hosting these events because it’s fun to watch people bloom and be excited about what they create. “It is especially fun to do with kids because of the excitement they show.”

A lot of emotion goes into Sandra’s painting, particularly family portraits and commissions of people who have passed away. She becomes deeply attached to certain paintings, including those of her late family members, children, and grandchildren, and often does not want to sell them.

Sandra is very passionate about her art and teaching others to paint. For information on her upcoming events, including a future event at Smooth Ambler Spirits, and to book private events, visit Sandra Schmocker Studio Art on Facebook.
