May 11 & 12: Native American Heritage Gathering

A celebration of Native American culture and history returns to downtown Lewisburg on Friday, May 11th and Saturday the 12th. The grounds of Academy Park located on Church Street beside New River Community College/Carnegie Hall, and the Greenbrier Historical Society will come alive with Native American drumming, dancing, culture and history. The event grounds will be open from 10am to 5pm each day. On Friday over 400 students from surrounding schools are expected, but the public is invited both Friday and Saturday.

This inter-tribal gathering provides an opportunity for First Nations people of various tribal affiliations to come together to reaffirm cultural ties and customs. At the same time schools and the community are offered an interactive educational opportunity to experience Indian culture in action. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions to better understand this important, living part of America’s story.

Grounds open at 10am each day and at 11am there will be a special History Alive presentation by Sacagawea.

At 12pm, Master of Ceremonies Danny Two Eagles will announce the Grand Entry into the traditional Circle and present Red River Drum, a living spirit, teaching and Pow-Wow drum.  Traditional dancing will follow and continue throughout the day. At 1pm, there will be a Flying Higher Birds of Prey demonstration.

Other activities and demonstrations that will take place throughout the day around the campus are Living History and Native American Life Ways, Trail of Tears Dance Troupe with Story Telling, Tepee 101, and West Virginia Snakes.

This special event is sponsored by the Greenbrier Historical Society. Donations are welcome and help to keep programs like this one alive and well. This event receives some financial assistance from the WV Humanities Council and the Alexander and Suzanne Rhey Foundation.
