Fall has made a stunning entrance here in the Valley. The colors are changing almost overnight, and it’s been the perfect time to hike, bike, or wander the backroads and soak in the beauty all around us.
This issue celebrates a few of the hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems in the Valley and beyond. Some were brand new discoveries for me, while others I’d walked past for years without knowing the stories inside. Orchard Hill Alpaca Farm is one of those recently discovered treasures, and Becky’s story and products are too good not to share. Then there’s The Bookstore in Lewisburg, a place I’ve strolled by since childhood without realizing just how much history was tucked inside. Don’t miss the story of one of the two longest-standing businesses in town. I’ve also found treasures at Primitive Goods in the past, and I’m excited to see what discoveries their new location will bring.
Another new-to-me gem is the honey and honey products produced by Little Creek Bee Company, right here in Greenbrier County. And the beekeeper behind it? Fourteen-year-old Rylan, whose story shines with both entrepreneurial spirit and the support of those rooting for him.
And because it’s October, you know what that means… time to get your scare on! The Ellis Haunted Mansion in Ronceverte is a frightfully fun way to support the mansion’s restoration, with goosebumps guaranteed inside the mansion and dark mayhem waiting on the grounds.
After dodging the ghostly tricks, or if cozy fall vibes are more your style than jump scares, treat yourself to apple butter, live music, and festival cheer. Gap Mills’ Fall Fling offers delicious baked goods from the Dough Ball Bakery, a variety of arts, crafts, and treats from local vendors, and good old-fashioned family fun. Later in the month, the Fall Fling Concert in Alderson will bring the Statler Brothers’ grandsons to the stage. And there’s also a car show!
Nature lovers and community supporters have lots to look forward to, too. The Greenbrier Master Naturalists are hosting a variety of activities this month: including an Evening Owl Prowl and learning All About BATS! (yes, they really are cute up close). And the Family Refuge Center’s annual Women’s Night Out is a wonderful chance to support the organization’s important work for families in our area.
October also means good eats! The Hub Cafe’s pumpkin rolls are back (get your orders in), and TOOT (Taste of Our Towns) is set to fill downtown with flavor, fun, and fantastic entertainment.
Discover what’s happening at Carnegie Hall this month: the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama take the stage, and the galleries feature breathtaking art exhibits by a variety of talented artists. Browse the Agenda for even more amazing acts and events coming to Carnegie.
October is shaping up to be a delightful month. Sip some cider, leaf through our pages, and dive into The Agenda to craft your own perfect lineup of fall fun. Wishing you a safe and happy October. See you out there!
