Born and raised in Peterstown, Jonah Carden has become a local musical fixture, captivating audiences with his blend of classic rock covers and original tunes. Growing up in a household filled with rhythm, Jonah’s passion for music was ignited by watching his father play drums in a band that practiced in their basement.
What got you into the music scene?
“Seeing my dad play was a huge inspiration for me,” Jonah reflects. “That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue music seriously.” Since 2008, Jonah has shared the stage with his father in the band One-Eyed Jack, who perform every few months at various venues, creating a unique dynamic that resonates deeply with their fans. However, Jonah’s musical journey extends beyond just singing; he picked up the guitar in 1998 and has since mastered the piano and bass guitar.
Do you have any albums?
With four solo albums under his belt, Jonah’s most recent release, Hands of Time, dives into his evolution as an artist. Available on all major streaming platforms, the album reflects his love for diverse sounds and emotional depth. Influenced by iconic bands like Alice in Chains and Jimi Hendrix, Jonah admires their innovative vocal harmonies and groundbreaking sound. “They have a way of changing your mood and making you feel so many different emotions,” he says.
What attracts you to music?
For Jonah, music is more than just a job; it’s a sanctuary. “It’s a good, healthy escape. When I’m playing, I don’t have time to worry about other things,” he explains. This passion drives him to perform solo three to four times a week across the two Virginias, and he is set to take the stage at Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company on November 10th, along with Chandler Beaves & Friends for the “Greenbrier Gives Back” flood relief benefit, highlighting his commitment to both music and community.
What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
Jonah emphasizes perseverance when beginning the journey to becoming a musician and throughout the music career. “Practice a lot and never quit, even when it gets discouraging. If it were easy, everyone would do it,” he advises.
Grateful for the talent he sees in the West Virginia mountains, Jonah hopes his music stands out to others. “I think my sound is a little different from what everyone else is playing. I hope people will check it out,” he says, his passion evident in every word.
