Elements of Us is an alternative pop band composed of three members, all from Greenbrier County. Hashtag recently had the pleasure of speaking with one of the band members, Koley Bolen. Koley has been part of Elements of Us for about seven years, but the current lineup, which formed around two years ago, has created a chemistry that the band previously lacked. While all three members write music, Koley and Tyler play guitar and piano, and Jesse is the drummer. In the interview, Koley shared insights into their music, the reason behind their transition to a trio, the chemistry within the band, and more.
What inspired you to become a musician and form a band?
Koley was inspired to pursue music after watching one of his favorite bands, Coldplay, perform a live concert on television. The enthusiasm and passion in their performance captivated him, and he decided to try singing. He also noted that he did not realize how cool the piano could be until he saw it played during the Coldplay concert, which motivated him to learn the instrument. Each member of the band was searching for a sense of self-worth and had a deep passion for music. Having been friends for many years, Koley, Tyler, and Jesse discovered that their strong personal connection enhanced their musical chemistry and performance.
What attracts you to music?
“Music is universal; no matter where you are in the world, it has the power to connect people,” Koley says. He believes that music creates emotions and chemistry unlike anything else. He also added that the band have such an interest in music that they would play even if they were unable to perform for others.
Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?
“Never give up. If it makes you happy, pursue it regardless of what others might say. People may not always see your vision for music,” Koley advises.
What is your goal as a songwriter/musician?
“My goal is to be authentic in my lyrics. Genuine music forms a stronger connection with listeners than writing lyrics you believe fans want to hear,” Koley explains. The band writes about life experiences, often starting with Koley’s ideas and then incorporating input from the other members to create lyrics that resonate with them all.
Do you have any idols?
Koley’s top idol is the band he is currently part of. His involvement in the music industry has provided him with a new perspective on how things work. Other idols of his include Twenty One Pilots and The 1975, whom he admires for their genuine lyrics. He notes that such authenticity is rare today, as many artists write with the intent of connecting with their audience rather than staying true to their own experiences.
The band has performed at many private shows and local Greenbrier County events but as the year draws to a close, Elements of Us will embark on their first tour across the East Coast. The band currently has two albums out, with Volume 1 of their latest album recently released, Volume 2 set for December, and Volume 3 scheduled for next year. You can find their albums on various music streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.
