Hi Readers,

Happy July, a month of Independence, warm weather, and so many outdoor activities!

Most of you know our previous editor has moved on to other things. She will be missed by all, but I hope to fill her shoes well. I am Chelsea Blair, a native of Monroe and Greenbrier Counties. I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity and sharing my stories with you all, as well as working with those who share their stories for the entertainment of our community!

This month you can enjoy two more long-time traditions, the relaxing Skyline Bluegrass Festival on the river and the fantastic Alderson Fourth of July Celebration. I have always loved the Alderson Fourth of July Celebration, as have my family. As a child my grandmother always went over the top decorating for the “Home and Business Decorating Contest”. The parade and fireworks were something I enjoyed greatly with my parents, grandparents and siblings and now I am creating those memories with my own little family.  

With warm weather presenting what better way to celebrate summer and hot weather than with delicious ice cream from Union’s new business, Sara’s Sweet Treats! Check it out in this month’s Good Eats column. 

In our Unplugged addition you can read about musician Dwain Sheppard. Don’t forget to look out for his upcoming events including “Cruisin4Kidz” coming this month to the State Fairgrounds. 

In Going Wild, Patrick Calvert discusses the Delta Aquarids Meteor shower coming later this month as well as an assortment of mushrooms found in our state. He also encourages you to go outdoors and enjoy summer, maybe check out his favorite spot to relax. 

If the scorching weather is not your cup of tea, try an indoor event, check out Carnegie Hall’s 2024-2025 schedule of events, Open Mic Night at GVBC or Trivia Night at Mountain Table. There are plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy this month!
