It’s been a while since the downtown Lewisburg (Greenbrier County) hydrants were last painted bright shades of colors – some even decorated to celebrate the theatre and the mountains to show off community flair. The project was initially done in the Fall of 2012 and the hydrants are now ready for a colorful artistic refresh!

Refresh the Fire Hydrants Contest, hosted by the Lewisburg in Bloom Committee, is an opportunity for local artists to come together to paint a commissioned fire hydrant with original artwork. Fire hydrants will be painted on-site during the contest which is held between May 23rd-25th.

Artists will need to provide and use their own oil-based paint and sealer on their designs. Each artist or organization may submit up to two designs. Plans must be pre-approved by the Lewisburg in Bloom Committee. There will be 11 hydrants in total and they are located on/around Washington Street, Court Street, Lafayette, etc.

“We are very excited to gather our best artists to refresh the hydrants that were painted 10 years ago”

– Shannon Beatty, Lewisburg in Bloom Committee

And the best part? Folks in the community will VOTE for their favorite hydrant(s) on the Lewisburg in Bloom Committee’s facebook page! Voting takes place from May 26 through Friday, June 3rd. The winner will be announced on Friday, June 3rd which is just in time for First Friday in downtown Lewisburg. Maps will also be distributed showing the locations of the painted hydrants!

If you are an artist, please consider participating in this artistic facelift of Lewisburg’s fire hydrants!
