Shakespeare’s popular romantic comedy, As You Like It, will be performed on stage at the Pocahontas Opera House in Marlinton on Saturday, July 6, 7:30-9:30pm. This play stirs wit, sentiment, intrigue and love into a charming confection which challenges the traditional rules of romance. At its heart, a feisty but feminine Rosalind, in love with the endearingly naive Orlando, uses her disguise as Ganymede to council him playfully in the art of wooing. Distraction is provided by the remarkably funny Touchstone, and the sonorous tones and lugubrious wit of Jaques.
This production will be performed by The Rustic Mechanicals, West Virginia’s only Shakespeare Troupe. Founded in 2014 by Celi Oliveto, the company produces three shows annually focusing on making Shakespeare’s plays accessible to modern audiences by utilizing interesting production concepts, dynamic staging, and extreme casting.
Also this month, don’t miss North Carolina based Bucket Brothers, who will play jazz on Saturday, July 20th, 7:30p-9pm.
Bucket Brothers’ Logan and Casey Valleroy have captivated audiences since 2012 with their sophisticated arrangements, seamless improvisation, and beyond-their-years mastery of jazz. Fans enthuse over their musicianship, composure, and stage presence. The brothers capped 2016 with an appearance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, joining jazz luminaries Chuck and Robert Redd and other leading jazz artists at the annual All-Star Christmas Day Jazz Jam. In 2017, they were featured on the Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour, sharing the stage with Livingston Taylor and Rebecca Loebe.
The Opera House is Pocahontas County’s premier performing arts center. An intimate venue, with seating for about 250, it is part of the West Virginia Historic Theatre Trail. It is located at 818 Third Ave in Marlinton. For more information above the above events, call 304-799-6645. To order tickets, visit PocahontasOperaHouse.org.
