April 5: Have a Good Chili Recipe? Prove it.

Chili march 10

The Irish Pub on Washington St. and IGLOO Design Workshop are hosting a chili competition for all! Individuals, teams, restaurants, and chefs are invited to cook up their best batch and put it to the test in a friendly cook-off on Saturday, April 5th. This will be the third of what seems to becoming an annual event here in Lewisburg. The past two years competitions and show went over so well that the Irish Pub welcomed the event back for another go around. Chili cooks and patrons from all walks came out to participate in what turned out to be a splendid afternoon of chili tasting and socializing. 17 batches of chili entered the competition last year and 4 went home with prize money including a category for ‘most original’. Event founder Ian Lutz had this to say about the past events, “The event has gone extremely well and there has been a great turnout each year so far. It’s a legit competition and a great experience for competitors and patrons. We hope it keeps growing!”

If you are interested in competing, please head to the Irish Pub for sign up. Entry feeis $25 (due at signup) and is limited to one entry per individual/team. Entrants will be given a rule sheet and details upon registration. The deadline for sign up is March 31st and there are only 20 spots in the competition so be sure to get to the Pub and register soon! Each participant (or one team member) will get free draft beer during the event and free admission to the performance that evening.

True chili is defined as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and ingredients with the exceptions of items such as beans or pasta. However, this event strays a little from conventional competitions by allowing vegetables and beans. That’s not to discourage all you purists from bringing your ‘A’ game. All ingredients must be pre cooked and treated prior to the event and chili must be brought hot ready to eat. Each contestant must bring their own crock-pot, chili will be served to patrons by Pub staff.

The 2014 Great Greenbrier Valley Chili Competition will run from 4-7 PM and is open to all ages. Starting at 3pm the cover for patrons will be $5 and each person attending will get to judge the chili. Winners will be selected by a tally of patron ballots and announced at 7:30 PM with up to $500 in cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and most original. A performance by Johnson’s Crossroad will start at 9pm; cover will be $7 for the show. For more details visit: igloodw.com
