On Friday, November 15th, our favorite pig shack (ie When Pigs Fly BBQ) will be celebrating its 1 year anniversary in its brick and mortar establishment located in Fairlea/Lewisburg near Greenbrier Motors. The first 50 patrons will receive FREE cake provided by B. Sweet Confectionery and FREE Homestead Creamery ice cream. If you would like to start celebrating right now, we invite you to partake in our LBSPY PIG SHACK RAFFLE to WIN DINNER for 2 (excludes alcohol). Find the 3rd flying pig inside LBSPY #45 (could be anywhere from pages 2-16). When you find it, email us at and tell us where you found it. Deadline to enter: Wednesday, November 13th at midnight. (more info, page 3 of LBSPY #45 print issue)

If you’re wondering how the Pig Shack got started, here’s the story… The idea to launch this restaurant started during the winter of 2005-2006 by owners Mike and Kellen. With a shared interest in learning the ins and outs of specialty barbeque and launching a business behind it, Mike learned to smoke meat while Kellen perfecting recipes for sauces and rubs. By February 2006, the duo were ready to begin construction on their Pig Shack trailer. The trailer was essentially converted from a flatbed farm trailer into a mobile bbq unit by Mike and his son Josh. Nothing like doing it yourself (D.I.Y) as we believe here at LBSPY. After lots of late nights and hard work, the shack was open for business on April 1st, 2006, located at 219 North in Lewisburg in the lot now home to Fortunate Finds and across from Colonial Ford. As with the way most new business owners feel, Mike and Kellen were broke, scared, and full of hope. Today, they are 7 years in with over a hundred festivals under their belts and a provider to 10’s of 1000’s of happy patrons.

If you’re not familiar with When Pigs Fly, they are OPEN EVERYDAY (look up and to the right ^->) and offer free lunch delivery (weekly) on all orders $15 or more. They also offer catering, premium ice cream from Homestead Creamery (a little dairy located in Burnt Chimney, VA), and they never charge for refills on non-alcoholic drinks. The two see themselves as a family serving families. Please keep in mind that during these chillier evenings, you can enjoy the patio heater on the deck.

The Pig Shack offers a brief list of specialty drinks such as fresh brewed Luzianne Southern Style Sweet Tea. Alcoholic drinks include select wines and a large variety of bottle and draft beers (imported & domestic).

We suggest you stay updated with the Pig Shack’s Daily Specials posted on their facebook and twitter. Specials always change so check regularly. Be on the look-out for the new Fall 2013 Menu coming out this November. If you’re attending this year’s Mega Business, find the When Pigs Fly booth. Free samples will be handed out as well as a door prize of a $50 gift card!!!

Lastly, you can order your Thanksgiving Dinner from the Pig Shack including Turkey, Ham, and all your favorite side fixens. At least one week notice must be given on all orders. Last day to place your Thanksgiving order is: Thursday, November 21st. In the event you forget to order your Thanksgiving dinner or don’t have a chance to cook, China Palace will be open.
