MTN SCENE: LEWISBURG’S BEST KEPT SECRET BY CRAIG MILLER

Ruby Rooster Feature Nov 18 SML

One of the Lewisburg area’s best kept secrets, the Ruby Rooster is a vast and eclectic mix of affordable antiques, primitive collectables, and everything else underneath the sun. With well over 5,000 square feet of space, there’s bound to be something here that will get your rooster crowing.

John and Sue Wyman bought the former Miller’s Country Store in 2003, and have operated under the name Ruby Rooster ever since. One of their friends suggested the change, channeling the pair to look for a business name that was unusual, yet easy to remember. The Red Rooster was an option, but with this moniker being fairly common, the two decided upon the more fitting and present business name Ruby Rooster.

“A cozy, country store setting where one has the option to walk down memory lane”, says John, and he isn’t lying. Several primitive collectables and displays line the store, but are particularly concentrated in the back portion of the store. Antique furniture fills the upper portion and middle half, along with smaller miscellaneous antiques, too numerous to fully enjoy or comprehend in one visit. Many civil war era memorabilia and artifacts can also be found here.

Situated atop a large table and shelf display lies hundreds of Fiestaware pieces, including full sets, and quite possibly that one missing link that you’ve always wanted to complete an existing collection. A wide array of vintage metal lunchboxes are on display and for sale here, including some very cool Masters of the Universe, Cabbage Patch Kids, G.I. Joe, and my favorite: The Fall Guy.

During the holidays, you will find warmly lit and decorated Christmas trees, along with holiday themed primitives throughout the store. With trees and loads of ornaments, sprays, and decorations for sale, they have many unique items that you just don’t see in the big box stores.

Each year, on the First Saturday in November, the owners host a holiday open house, also referred to as “The Celebration of The Season”.

The Ruby Rooster is open Monday thru Saturday 10am – 5pm. While you’re there, be sure to walk next door to Taste of Heaven Bakery. They have an enormous selection of meats and cheeses, dried fruits, and some of the best Reuben Sandwiches (served on Friday only) and Homemade Pies that you’ll ever find round’ these parts. For those who would like to view a sample of the illustrious Christmas trees and decorations found at the Ruby Rooster, a holiday tree provided by John and Sue can be seen at Serenity Now Outfitters in downtown Lewisburg.
