Thanksgiving

I’m getting burnt out on Thanksgiving. I love the idea of the holiday, but after thirty years Thanksgiving dinner just doesn’t have the same appeal it used to. Two years ago, we switched things up and did Thanksgiving at my house. Rather than sitting around bug-eyed and drooling while waiting for supper (like we usually do), we prepared various hot dips, made sangria and cocktails, and snacked and drank as soon as everyone got to the house. It was anything but traditional – by Blair standards, anyway – and I had a blast. In fact, when the traditional portion of the meal was ready, there was no stampede to the table. We just sat around and enjoyed ourselves until the mood hit us to finally make a plate (or two). I’d love to kick Thanksgiving up a notch again this year, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what can be done. Would it be too short notice to have my family get outfits together and do it up like Pilgrims this year? Actually, I’m not really sure how my dad would look in a doublet and those wonky buckled shoes, plus washing all those wooden plates by hand would be a pain. Maybe there’s something to be said for tradition, after all!
