wheels of hope

The Greenbrier Valley Bicycle Club is making final preparations for the 8th Annual Wheels of Hope bicycle ride slated for Saturday, July 19th, starting at 8am. The ride starts and finishes at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in downtown Lewisburg, WV.

The event kicks off on Friday, July 18with bike demos provided by Free Spirit Adventures and Hill & Holler Bicycle Works, beginning at 4:30pm at Carnegie Hall‘s Ivy Terrace and a free concert featuring The Half Bad Bluegrass Band from 6:30pm – 8:30 pm. Everyone is invited to join this free concert, which is sponsored by Country Road Realty LLC and Dirt Ways LLC. Bring your chairs and favorite food and refreshments and enjoy some great music and fellowship. Show up Saturday morning and cheer all the riders as they head down Washington Street at 8:00am before heading out into the country on one of four rides between 18 and 106 miles.

There are four challenging routes to pull out of the Snake Pit this year, the Snake Bite Century, Asp Burner Metric Century, our beautiful Milk Snake route, and the 18 mile Garter Snake Ride.

Century Ride: The “Snake Bite” Tri-County Challenge
The big challenge this year, our “Snake Bite” travels through 3 beautiful counties; Greenbrier, Monroe, and Summers for 112 miles! Filled with challenging hills and total elevation gain of over 8500 ft! This route will take in some of the most scenic countryside you can imagine with an added treat of going across a historic wooden covered bridge! Click to view interactive map.

Metric Century Ride: The “Asp-Burner” Metric
For those not wanting to commit to the longer distance, this route will give you a challenging ride with all the beautiful countryside but still give you bragging rights to Snake Run climb and cross the historic wooden covered bridge! Click to view interactive map.

Milk Snake 31 mile mid-challenge ride
There is nothing about this ride that can’t be milked for bragging: An udderly beautiful ride, a couple of good climbs, history that you ride across, and accomplishment. It’s the Crème de la Crème of rides of this length! We offer you this convenient length ride because we listened to you, and you asked for it! Click to view interactive map.

Easy Cruise: The “Garter Snake” 18 mile cruise
A fun-filled easy cruise for those just beginning to cycle or those just out for an easy spin with friends and family. There will be a rest stop approximately 6 miles into the ride. Click to view interactive map.

All net proceeds from the event benefit local residents fighting cancer and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Local gifts are meant to inspire hope for emotional, spiritual and physical healing for cancer survivors, with “survivorship” beginning on the day of diagnosis. The success of the event would not be possible without the generous support of local businesses and residents, the many volunteers who lend their time, and a dedicated committee made up from members of the Greenbrier Valley Bike Club. Last year riders from 13 states participated in the event, which has grown each year. This year many of the downtown merchants are providing discounts to participants throughout the weekend.
