The 3rd Annual Festival in the Hills featuring expert wood carver, Josh Landry, is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th in Monroe County. There will also be wine, beer, food, music, and a children’s art exhibition. This event will be held all day from 11am-7pm at the Old Sulphur Springs Resort in Salt Sulphur Springs and just a few minutes south from Union, WV. This area is home to a significant collection of native limestone buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, since 1985.

A custom chainsaw sculptor from North Anson, Maine, Josh Landry delivers one of a kind works of art that are created in less than hour. Festival organizers are adding a new feature this year with “The Children’s Corner” hosted by children’s authors Brittany Cassity and Joey Truxell. There will be two stations where children can explore their creativity with a variety of artistic materials. One table will colored pencils, crayons, and chalk pastels and the other will hold water based paints. Parents are encouraged to bring paint shirts to help protect clothing. All of the young visitors will be cheered on by Cassity and Truxell to work with any and all of the options and create their masterpiece. It is anticipated that all children will display their work at the Children’s Art Exhibition, held at 4pm. Don’t worry if you’re late, the display will be up and available for viewing all day (11 am to 7 pm). When the exhibition ends, you are also welcome take your child’s beautiful new masterpiece home.

Local restaurants will provide festival attendees with gourmet delights. Vendors include The Korner Kafe from Union. 50 East and sister shop, Vines & Grinds from White Sulphur Springs WV. Also on the list is a restuarant which serves up the areas best brisket, Stuart’s Smokehouse out of Alderson. Lewisburg’s Stella’s Restaurant and No Place Like Home will also be serving up gourmet delights.

Throughout the day West Virginia wineries and brewers will provide tastings and sale of their wine and/or spirits. Stuart’s Smokehouse will have beer. Wine will be provided by Watts Roost Vineyard from Lewisburg, Vu Ja De Vineyards out of Spencer, Cox Family Winery from Martinsburg, and West-Whitehill Winery which is located in Hardy County.

And threading through all the other enjoyable things to see and taste is the music: This year we are partnering with The West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting and preserving the rich and lasting contributions West Virginians have made to all genres of music. The Hall of Fame’s mission is to recognize the many important musicians who have helped shape the rich spectrum of American music from country, classical and jazz to rock, R&B, gospel and traditional. The WVMHoF’s mission also includes establishing a permanent facility to house the Hall of Fame and an accompanying museum to exhibit and archive recordings and memorabilia. Music will also be performed by The Carpenter Ants, Little Sparrow, R&D Duets (guitar, cello & vocal duet), Doc Greenberg’s Patient Jazz, The Boatmen and Julie Adams.

This year’s festival will benefit Scottie’s Place, Peterstown WV (scottiesplace.org) High atop Powell Mountain in Peterstown WV, Scottie’s Place is a US based 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization established in 1999 providing programs that assist children affected by poverty and conflict. All programs are offered free of charge to all participants and funded by private, civic, corporate, foundation and church-based charitable donations. It is hard to imagine a more beautiful yet functional location for Scottie’s Place. The land itself embodies the spirit of the camp: Rolling Meadows, deep forests and mountain streams offer the perfect setting for camping retreats, exploration, rejuvenation and high-spirited fun.
