Hill and Holler Mtn State Mudder 2013

EVENT: Mountain State Mudder CX
WHERE: West Virginia State Fairgrounds. Fairea, West Virginia
WHEN: Saturday, November 9, 2013. 12pm

The Mountain State Mudder CX could be considered “Almost Heaven, a little bit of Hell.” You may or may not have heard of Cyclocross Racing. Just in case it’s an unfamiliar term, cyclocross racing typically takes place in the autumn and winter months. It consists of several short laps (1.5–2 mile) in a course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the riders to dismount, carry their bicycle, navigate through obstructions, and remounting of the bicycle. Also, this race will not be cancelled to due the natural elements of rain or snow. In the event of rain or snow, participants will be extra fired up to ride while spectators will come dressed accordingly and enjoying the many views of race action.

As a race contestant, you will be pushed to your physical limits while your other less serious couterparts will be drinking beer, riding peculiar bikes and wearing costumes all the while heckling other riders as they get passed and even lapped. This race is all about having fun, Hill and Holler Bicycle Works has incorporated this in every way. They will be spinning live records at the finish line, and yelling at contestants from the woods or possibly playing bluegrass music at the terrible washout turn. Bells, horns, hoots and hollers are encouraged to prod the racers toward the finish line.

So down to the specifics Cyclocross Racing is a type of off-road racing over a rugged, muddy course. Cycle Cross bikes are encouraged because they have more clearance in the wheel well and added space between the bottom bracket and the ground. These bikes also have stronger rims and a durable light weight frame. Hill & Holler thinks that while it is best for the serious rider to have a cyclocross specific bike, any bike will do with the correct tires.
