Saturday, July 12: Old World Cycling in VA

alleghany gran fondo

There is no need to cross the Atlantic for an Old World cycling experience. Come to Virginia’s scenic Alleghany Highlands region for the second annual Gran Fondo Alleghany Highlands. Easily accessible from Interstate 64, and just minutes from Greenbrier County, the Alleghany Highlands’ majestic peaks and picturesque valleys might be mistaken for a region of France or Germany. With electronic chip timing, a King of the Mountains competition, and a mass start, all the elements of the classic European Gran Fondo will be here stateside and served up with southern hospitality.

Riders are offered three course choices: the Gran Fondo, a 102-mile mountainous course; the Medio Fondo, a 60-mile mountainous course with slightly more climbing than last year; and the Piccolo Fondo, a 22-mile hilly course, returns to its shorter route from 2011.

This year, the Gran Fondo takes a different route leaving Covington heading west and south and into West Virginia for a couple of miles, before turning north again to Clifton Forge and Warm Springs Mtn.

“Great ride! Outstanding support! Oh Yeah…. And a bunch of climbing! See you in July! 3rd year in a row for me!” – Paul M.

Unlike like last year, there will be staggering start times, with the Gran Fondo riders starting earliest, in order to keep a party atmosphere at the finish line in Clifton Forge.

“Extremely well-run event, with great courses that vary from year to year – but the climbing is always there!” – M. Doyle

Participants will receive meal coupons redeemable at restaurants throughout the region. They will also get post-ride food and beverage, bike valet service in Covington Friday night/Saturday morning, shuttle service from parking at Clifton Forge finish to ride start in Covington on Saturday morning, free technical/mechanical support, fully stocked food and water stops, electronic Chip Timing, and of course, finishers’ medals.

“This is not only a super ride, but also a tremendous amount of fun. Whether you’re a rider, volunteer, or spectator, be sure to join us for this fabulous event. More fun than you can count. You’ll be glad you did!”- Lynda T.

So get your bike ready (and possibly tuned up… we suggest the pros at Hill and Holler Bike Shop in Lewisburg, see page 17) for this year’s Gran Fondo, slated Saturday, July 12th in the scenic Alleghany Highlands, Virginia.
