I was hit in the face with a racquetball this week. We play mostly for the cardiovascular exercise, but this week I was feeling pretty competitive. I ran to the front of the court and volleyed the ball, but by the time I could turn around he’d already sent it back my way and it was about a foot from my face. I could say the impact hurt, but that would be an understatement. It was so shockingly painful that I started to simultaneously laugh and cry. As I sat on the floor of the court boo-hoo’ing in the most dignified way I could muster, all I could think of was how embarrassing it would be to have my safety goggles surgically removed from my face. I was in so much pain that I was convinced they were embedded in my cheek. I finally calmed down and assessed the damage. Nothing. Not a single mark to show for my pain and humiliation. I think I’m more irritated by my lack of battle scars than anything. At this rate, I’ll never get to use the line “you should see the other guy!” But, now that I think about it, I’ve been playing twice a week for months and I’ve only won one game. There’s probably plenty of time left to receive a bona fide black eye. Wish me luck!
