MUSIC REVIEW: RUSH RUN PHILHARMONIC @ 19TH HOLE

rush run philharmonic

Friday night Rush Run Philharmonic played at the 19th Hole Casual Cuisine in Lewisburg. This is a local band playing a wide variety of American classics, folk, blues, cowboy and rock ‘n roll with two guitars, stand up bass and lush three part harmony. Phil Rolleston and Pat Gabbert have loved playing guitar and singing since their teens. Ginger Must sings lyrical lead and harmony, and her her husband, Bob, sings and plays base. Altogether the band knows hundreds of interesting and unusual songs.

The 19th Hole is on the second floor of the golf club just north of I64. The venue is spacious and inviting with low lights, candle-lit tables and a big dance floor. The staff was enthusiastically welcoming and cordial. They offered food and bar drinks, and made sure everyone feels comfortable. There were elegant couples dancing to continuous, smooth, romantic dance music.

Some of the dancer’s favorite songs were, Love at the Five and Dime, Louise, Lost in a Masquerade, Mountain, Across the Great Divide, Evangeline and Tall Buildings. Interspersed were high spirited uptempo renditions of Mind Your Own Business, Mabelline, and C’et La Vie You Never Can Tell which brought everyone jumping to the dance floor.

Joining the band for the last set were Lewisburg musicians Tracy and Don Steck and Mike Clark. Don plays dramatic slide guitar and Tracy’s powerful voice delivered Mary, Did You Know, Summertime, and Dylan’s I Don’t See Why I Should Even Care. Tracy’s gifted drumming added depth and definition to the set.
The whole group collaborated on a gorgeous Do You Want My Job, where Don’s deep voice added the perfect touch.

Members of the audience were enthusiastic: “I love the band,” “They have a nice hometown sound.”

The musicians returned: “We love to sing the songs we love, and we love to have our audience sing with us.” Phil Rolleston summed it up well, “I love to see the audience smile.”
