Mountain Scene: The River is Calling. An Interview with Beverly and Bob at Greenbrier River Campground

Warm weather is finally here and it’s time to start thinking about getting back to nature with family and friends. Whether you like to pitch your own tent or get a good night’s sleep in an air-conditioned cabin, Greenbrier River Campground offers excellent accommodations for all kinds of folks. Families can’t help but love this campground, which is located on the Greenbrier River in Alderson. Owned by Bob Bociek and Beverly Wolfe, they offer RV and tent sites, 30 and 50 amp hookups, pump out, laundry, and restrooms with showers. They also offer kayak, canoe, and tube rentals with shuttle service. Established in 1989, Bob and Beverly take special pride in being “First on the River.” Their guests have access to a thousand feet of riverfront for great fishing and one of the best swimming holes. What inspired to start GRC?

We have to give credit to Virgil Hanshaw, who had the vision to open Greenbrier River Company in 1989.  We were working in our chosen professions, looking for a change from managing lawyers and working in the contracting business in the Northeast.  We had picked up an old Airstream, spent some time renovating the trailer and thought we’d hit the road, find a business, sell the rig and settle in to a new lifestyle.  We looked at the Campground on a trip down to Asheville to see family and discovered it was exactly what we were looking for:  not only a campground with rentals, but an active river trip business too.

How many folks camp with you each season?

Between camping, cabins and paddlers, we average 3,000 guests per year.  Most of our visitors are from WV and surrounding states including Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, NC, etc., but we have every state and Canada as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, UK, France and Australia.

Why do you think folks should choose your campground or cabins?

Our cabins are a unique way to experience the area; they go well beyond the typical hotel room.   Plus, we aren’t just a great place to stay in beautiful setting minutes from Lewisburg, Alderson and White Sulphur Springs; we also offer a way for the novice to the expert paddler and/or fishermen to enjoy West Virginia’s untamed river, the Greenbrier. We work hard to keep our place looking good, our cabins are spotless, and our hot tubs are clean and inviting.  We are happy to invite guests back year after year.

What’s your favorite part of

running the campground?

Our guests arrive ready to have a good time.  You never know who you’ll meet or what will happen to make you laugh, but every day brings something new.

Can guests build campfires?

It’s not camping without a fire now, is it?  Every cabin and site has a fire ring.  Wood is for sale at the camp store.

How far away are the campsites from other campers?

Our cabins are surrounded by privacy fences.  RV sites are about 30’ wide.  Tent sites are spread along the river bank and are generally separated by trees, greenery and the natural landscape.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are allowed as long as they (and their owners) are well-behaved.

What local attractions and restaurants do you suggest?

If they’re getting on the river, a lot of guests love the idea of taking out at Stuart’s Smokehouse, just a couple of miles downstream.   If the river isn’t cooperating, we send people out to Lake Sherwood where we rent boats on the lake. For rainy days, we send visitors to the caves or, depending on their interests, to Hawk Knob, Smooth Ambler Spirits, and Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co. We’re regular patrons with the downtown Lewisburg and surrounding area restaurants and can always recommend a good fit for our guests. Not just downtown but out to the golf course and the Dutch Haus restaurant; it all depends on what our guests are looking for.  Of course, quite a few guests already have plans to visit The Greenbrier Resort and check out the bunker tours.

Do you offer planned activities?  River trips are our #1 activity, but we offer music and special events on holiday weekends.

Do you have waterfront campsites?  All of our tent sites are on the riverside.  Our cabins all have a beautiful view of the water, but from the higher elevation of the bank.  Many of our RV sites also overlook the river.

For the 2019 season, Beverly and Bob’s accommodations include four fully-equipped cabins and two rental RVs, including a vintage ’64 Shasta camper for a unique riverside camping experience. Make GRC  your destination and see what our corner of West Virginia has to offer. While you’re there, pick up a t-shirt, hat, or sticker featuring the Greenbrier River. Bob and Beverly created new designs each year. For more information, visit them on facebook @GreenbrierRiverCampground or go to greenbrierriver.com. Happy camping!
