HOME ON THE RANGE BY JIM SHOCK

L&S 3

Even before marriage, Lisa and Steve Hudnall, owners of L & S Gun Range in Caldwell, WV, shared a passion for pistol shooting. So much so, they drove to Beckley nearly every weekend to enjoy dinner, a movie and a few relaxing rounds of… bullets. The couple unwinds with target practice and, apparently, so do lots of locals. While visiting the Beckley range, Lisa and Steve began to notice more and more familiar faces from Greenbrier County. So they decided to bring the experience closer to home.

Lisa and Steve knew, if they built it, customers would come. After purchasing a vacant lot and completing an extensive 5-year business plan last January, the couple broke ground in March and opened L & S Gun Range on September 15, 2012. In the year since they opened the first-class, family-friendly, indoor shooting range interest in marksmanship increased dramatically. The goal of L & S Gun Range is to make the sport accessible to everyone, from beginner to expert.

No detail was overlooked in constructing the facility. From day one, safety was the primary objective. Every inch of the range was built according to exacting NRA specifications. Inside, the range consists of 10, 25-yard lanes. The surrounding walls are reinforced with eight inches of poured concrete. The backstop is lined with AR 400 bulletproof steel plate. Two feet out from the plate is a frame covered with rubber infused Kevlar sheets, and between the two foot gap is 22,000 pounds of ballistic media.

Both Lisa and Steve are NRA certified instructors. They also completed defensive handgun training courses with Pat Goodalle, owner of PFT (Practical Firearms Training) in Alderson. To ensure they speak to the individual learning styles of their students, the couple prefers to “team teach” first timers. Their diverse approaches help learners achieve different successful outcomes. Admittedly, Lisa caters to women. She believes creating a comfort level is especially important when introducing them to the fine points of shooting a gun. In fact, she trained both of her daughters.

Every Friday from 5PM to 8PM the public is welcome to participate in center-fire and rim-fire shooting tournaments using NRA bull’s-eye and silhouette targets. L & S Gun Range also sells ammo and ATF manufactured reloads. Don’t have a firearm? No problem. Rentals are available to anyone over 21 and they can special order guns as well. L & S Gun Range offers a variety of recreational options for the entire family. Costs vary based on time, training offered and increments. Walk-ins are welcome or call 304-647-4600 for reservations or visit landspistolrange.com for more information. Also, ask about NRA, military and law enforcement discounts.

Whether you’re a first timer, novice wanting to improve or an expert ready to show off “your guns”, L & S Gun Range has an option guaranteed to be on target for you!
