If you live and breathe the game of golf or just love a mouth-watering steak with great company, check out Snead’s 1912 Steak (formerly Sam Snead’s Tavern) on the Main Street in Hot Springs, Virginia, across from The Omni Homestead. This is the area’s premier steakhouse honoring golf legend and Bath County native, Sam Snead. They invite you to come and roam the newly renovated restaurant from room to room, savoring the rich wood décor, and all the memorabilia collected by Sam himself as he made his way into golf history.

The former restaurant, Sam Snead’s Tavern was established in 1980. Jack Snead owns the building and he managed the Tavern until The Omni Homestead took over management, which lasted about 30 years. In more recent times, Jack’s vision for the restaurant was for it to become the premiere steakhouse in Bath County and surrounding area. He reached out the most expert team he could find to fulfill his idea and approached Kate & John Loeffler and Kyle & Krystal Krieger. Kate and John own the Inn at Gristmill Square; and Kyle and Krystal Krieger own neighboring French-American restaurant, Les Cochons d’Or, pronounced: Lay*Co*Shawn*Door or called LCdo.

“Great food. And I mean great. Maybe the best filet I’ve ever eaten, awesome Brussels sprouts with bacon and honey, good wine, good service and very nice Bananas Foster.” – Ron Webster, May 2017

The team took over the lease and made incredible interior renovations. They also appointed Executive Chef Mattie McGhee because they knew the legacy of Sam Snead would thrive under his direction. The restaurant reopened its doors as Snead’s 1912 Steak this past Spring 2017. Since the new team created a steakhouse, and a completely new business, they thought a new name was in order so it was “Adieu” to Sam Snead’s Tavern and “Hello” to Snead’s 1912 Steak! And here’s a fun fact: 1912 is the year Sam Snead was born, and, coincidentally, the same year the restaurant’s building was built.

“Without a doubt, the best steak I’ve had in a long time. Food was fantastic, and a great atmosphere.” – Tom Lup, June 2017

This establishment is a meat lover’s paradise and serves the finest Certified Angus Beef, coming from Buzz Meats in Charleston, West Virginia. Executive Chef McGhee’s dishes include Seared Ahi Tuna and Sautéed Trout, excellent Rappahannock Oysters, and one of the area’s best BBQ Pork Ribs for the region’s rib loons. But the specialties of the house remain the expertly prepared steaks, which in variety and quality, are hard to beat. In our humble, highly subjective opinion, the signature $80 Tomahawk Chop (featured above) is the best single cut of beef in the area. The Tomahawk Chop is a delectable 32-ounce ribeye with a long bone. It’s best described as a cavemen lollipop. When you order it, don’t worry about eating it off the bone. Your server will slice it for you on a tableside chopping block. This is a regular part of the service.

The steak menu also includes a tender, melt in your mouth, 8oz Filet Mignon, an 8oz. Bavette du Beouf, an 8oz. Hanger Steak (only one per cow!), a 14oz. Bone-in NY Strip Steak, an 18oz. Bone-In Ribeye, a 22oz. Prime Porterhouse, and a Berkshire Pork Chop which is cut from delicious Berkshire pigs. All steaks are garnished with a stuffed horseradish potato, caramelized onion jam, and fresh watercress. You can order your steak or chop with your choice of sauce, including: Red Wine Jus, Bearnaise, Sauce au Poivre, Horseradish Cream, or Blue Cheese Crust.

All sides are served à la carte which works wonderfully for everyone at your table. They include Potatoes ‘Au Gratin, House Cut Fries, Whipped Potatoes, Loaded Colassal Baked Potato, Mac & Cheese, Wood Grilled Asparagus with Foyot, honey/bacon Brussel Sprouts, and Roasted Wild Mushrooms.

If you enjoy being entertained, order a Tableside Caesar Salad for your 2nd course and the Tableside Bananas Foster for dessert. The Bananas Foster boasts fresh bananas that are cooked in butter, brown sugar, nutmeg and allspice. They are flambéed in banana liquor, Myer’s Rum, and served over vanilla ice cream. You can see the video of the banana’s foster being prepared @hashtagwv on instagram.

The change in management has been extremely well received. Locals and visitors are so excited to see the “new” Sam Snead’s.  “They are in love with the elevated style of service which includes table-side preparations, the fact that we are seating on the deck, and the new bar that was constructed upstairs.  They love the new menu and are really happy to see so many craft beers on tap.  It’s also another place that people can book via opentable, and make advance reservations for (which was not permitted if you weren’t staying at the Omni). It gives visitors to the area another approachable and available dining option.” – Kate Loeffler, co-owner.
