Fri. July 14: Bastille Day Waiter’s Race!

Inspired by the famous footrace in Paris, don’t miss The French Goat’s Bastille Day Waiter’s Race, slated for a second year, on Friday, July 14th at 5:30pm. The winner will be awarded with a bottle of Dom Perignon, the “best” vintage sparkling wine from Champagne, France that retails around $180.00. DJ Blaw Knox will play harmonious tunes in the garden and there will be $5 glasses of bubbles and rosé. Everyone is invited to attend!

The goal of the race is for the waiters to make it to the finish line without spilling water or without dropping the tray altogether. Judges will be at each corner and at the finish line. Bring a round cocktail tray and wear your work uniform. All waiters are encouraged to participate and registration starts at 5pm.

“I had so much fun competing in the Bastille Day Waiter’s Race last year! I look forward to defending my title again this year. Vive La France!” – Mark Van Buren, 2016 1st place winner and defending champion, waiter at Food & Friends.

The Waiter’s Race dates back to the beginning of the 20th century in Paris, London, and Berlin. The origin of this race “course des garçons de café” comes from France. At their beginning, waiters races started to be organized in order to improve the recognition of the waiter profession in Paris. This is the reason why even today the event has a French Touch and organizers used to schedule races on Bastille Day. Today, it is possible to find waiter’s races in more than 53 countries all over the world. From Hong Kong to Lewisburg, from Brussels to Jerusalem or from Buenos Aires to Ja

pan, waiters are at honor for a day and make a show in front of thousands of spectators.

In France, “La Fête Nationale” or French National Day, commemorates the Storming of the Bastille, which occurred on June 24th, 1789. The date marks the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, when a mob of angry Parisians stormed the Bastille prison, a symbol of the monarchy’s tyrannical rule. This was a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération, which celebrated the unity of the French people on July 14th, 1790. Every year on July 14th, celebrations are held throughout France. The streets are filled with military parades, fireworks, and festivities throughout the country.

Celebrate the unity of the people on July 14th at The French Goat! They are located on 111 S. Lafayette Street in downtown Lewisburg. For more info, call 304-647-1052
