My sister and I recently drove to Lewisburg to visit our parents. We’d decided not to call ahead, thinking our folks would be overjoyed at the surprise; grateful that their loving daughters had traveled an hour to rescue them from another humdrum Friday evening at home. Dad would be in the bedroom, having a cigarette and watching old Westerns. Mom would be in the living room, having a margarita and thumbing through the week’s mail-order catalogs. We’d swoop in – hugs and kisses – the folks would get teary-eyed and laugh at how impulsive we are and insist we all go out for dinner and drinks to discuss work and home and life in general. You can imagine my shock at finding them bustling around when we arrived, getting ready for a date night and dinner out. We didn’t want to impose (they had reservations, after all), so we went our separate ways and met back up at the house later to hang out and chat, which was nice. It’s odd, you know; parents grow up so fast. But in the end that’s the way these things go. It will be an adjustment, but I guess I’ll just have to learn to let them spread their wings and fly.
