Have a Good Chili Recipe? Prove it!

The Irish Pub on Washington St. and IGLOO Design Workshop are hosting a chili competition for all! Individuals, teams, restaurants, and chefs are invited to cook up their best batch and put it to the test in a friendly cook-off on Saturday, March 23rd.

This will be the second of what we hope will become an annual event here in Lewisburg. Last year’s competition and show went over so well that the Irish Pub welcomed the event back for another go around. Chili cooks and patrons from all walks came out to participate in what turned out to be a splendid afternoon of chili tasting and socializing. 13 batches of chili entered the competition and 4 went home with prize money including a category for ‘most original’. 2012 first place winner Allender Stewart had this to say about last year’s event, “What can be better than good music, tasty food, and lots of fun people? I can’t wait to try my luck again this year!”

If you are interested in competing, please head to the Irish Pub for sign up. Entry fee is $25 (due at signup) and is limited to one entry per individual/team. Entrants will be given a rule sheet and details upon registration. The deadline for sign up is March 17th and we only have 20 spots in the competition so be sure to get to the Pub and register soon! Each participant (or one team member) will get free draft beer during the event and free admission to the performance that evening.

“What can be better than good music, tasty food, and lots of fun people? Last year was my first cookoff ever, and I can’t wait to try my luck again!” – Allender Stewart, 1st Place Chili ‘12.

True chili is defined as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and ingredients with the exceptions of items such as beans or pasta. However, this event strays a little from conventional competitions by allowing vegetables and beans. That’s not to discourage all you purists from bringing your ‘A’ game. All ingredients must be pre-cooked and treated prior to the event and chili must be brought ready to eat. Each contestant must bring their own crockpot and chili will be served to patrons by Pub staff.

The Vern’s Pot O’ Chili Competition (the official title) will run from 4-7pm and is open to all ages. Starting at 3pm the cover for patrons will be $5 and each person attending will get to judge the chili. Winners will be selected by a tally of patron ballots and announced at 7:30pm with up to $500 in cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and most original. A performance by Vern’s Pot O’ Chili will start at 9pm; cover will be $10 for the show.
